FBI Director Patel returns looted cultural artifacts to Indonesian President Prabowo
The repatriation follows provenance research that showed the objects were smuggled out of Indonesia and will be displayed at the National Museum.
- On Wednesday, FBI Director Kash Patel returned cultural artifacts from Papua to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during a meeting at his residence in Jakarta.
- These items, originating from the Dani and Asmat tribes and Lake Sentani communities, historically served as symbols of wealth and status exchanged in marriage and ceremonial transactions, Indonesia Culture Minister Fadli Zon said.
- Provenance research confirmed the objects were smuggled out of Indonesia. "These are very valuable objects because this repatriation process is part of our effort to restore our cultural sovereignty," Zon said, adding the artifacts will be displayed at Indonesia's National Museum.
- This recovery follows the recent return of 34 Southeast Asian antiquities, including Buddhist sculptures depicting Avalokiteshvara from the eighth century, announced earlier this month by U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton.
- Patel arrived in Jakarta after talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on combating international online scams, as Indonesia intensifies efforts in recent years to reclaim cultural treasures lost through colonial-era theft and trafficking.
