Fazio, Corey will lead Connecticut GOP ticket in November
Fazio won 955-79 on the first ballot and later became the nominee by acclaim after Betsy McCaughey withdrew.
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, Connecticut Republicans nominated State Senator Ryan Fazio of Greenwich as their gubernatorial candidate at the state convention held at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville.
Former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart suspended her campaign Thursday after a law firm report alleged she used a city credit card for more than $200,000 in personal purchases, clearing the path for Fazio.
Fazio initially faced former New York Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey, but she withdrew after securing only 8% of delegates, falling short of the required 15% threshold to force an August primary.
Delegates also nominated Matt Corey of Manchester for lieutenant governor after State Representative Tim Ackert withdrew his candidacy, creating the Republican ticket to challenge Governor Ned Lamont in November.
Fazio will soon access more than $15 million in public financing through the Citizens' Election Program, positioning him to focus his general election message on reducing electric rates and state taxes.
