Cătălin Cherecheș, the mayor of Baia-Mare, fled the country, in a taxi, through the border point of Petea, on Friday morning, just a few hours before he was sentenced by the Cluj Court of Appeal to 5 years in prison with execution in the case in which he was accused of bribery. Chereches crossed the border with an identity card belonging to a relative, according to authorities.
