Family Tributes to 'Gentle' Little Boy After Mother Murdered Him
Emma Barnett was convicted after an 18-day trial in which prosecutors said she gave her son a lethal mix of prescription drugs and milk.
Emma Barnett faces sentencing tomorrow at Cambridge Crown Court for murdering her 14-month-old son, Oakley, following an 18-day trial that concluded on May 28.
Following a November 8, 2024, family court ruling that Oakley be taken into care, Barnett hid with the toddler in a loft at their Loughton home, where she administered a lethal combination of prescription medication and milk.
Police discovered Barnett cradling the toddler in the loft space after welfare concerns were raised. Detective Inspector James Holmes, who led the investigation, noted that Barnett confessed, "I killed him."
Oakley's family paid tribute to the cherished toddler, stating he "filled every room with light, laughter, and love" and that his smile "could brighten even the darkest day."
Essex Police stated their thoughts remain with the family as relatives expressed they will "forever grieve the memories" they will not get to make with Oakley.
