Family rescued from sinking yacht rammed by killer whales terrorising Atlantic

A pod of about 15 orcas has caused multiple yacht attacks along Portugal’s coast, with the Portuguese Air Force rescuing five people after their yacht sank.

  • On Friday, a family including three children aged 8, 10 and twelve were sailing 55 miles south‑east of Peniche and their yacht was rammed and sank, forcing them to abandon ship before a nearby fishing vessel rescued them.
  • Scientists say after five years of study they remain uncertain why the orcas attack, suspecting it may be play, with interactions peaking April–September and escalating in early 2023.
  • Parents sent an SOS at 8.45pm, prompting Lisbon's maritime search and rescue team to summon an EH‑101 Merlin helicopter, a Naval frigate and a lifeboat, with officers then winching survivors to a local hospital.
  • The family, reported to have travelled from Lorient, France, are receiving consular assistance after leaving hospital, and authorities noted this follows four similar incidents last month and a tourist yacht sank near Fonte da Telha beach two days earlier.
  • Experts warn about a small band of fifteen orcas damaging yachts along Iberia's Atlantic coast from the middle of the Bay of Biscay to Marbella, UCCF recorded a rescue on September 15.
