Mother of student who took his own life after University of Glasgow grade error to collect his degree
Ethan Brown was wrongly told he failed, but had earned a 2:1 honours degree; family highlights university communication failures and seeks systemic changes.
- On Monday, Tracy Scott will attend a University of Glasgow ceremony to collect her son Ethan Brown's degree on his behalf after a grading error.
- In September, university records show Ethan Brown was told he lacked a grade for one course, making him ineligible to graduate after planned June last year and hoped December dates.
- An aunt's queries prompted the university to re-examine records showing the grading error was not spotted by university staff nor identified by two internal and one external exam board, revealing Ethan had earned a 2:1 honours degree.
- The family have called for a full, transparent investigation into flawed academic processes, with Aamer Anwar saying, `This is the degree Ethan was always entitled to,` and the Crown Office confirmed a probe after their fatal accident inquiry request.
- University spokespeople said `As part of that investigation, the circumstances will also be considered by our specialist Health and Safety Investigation Unit which will assess whether there is evidence to suggest that any health and safety failings have occurred,` Ms Bain added, and the Scottish Funding Council referred the university to the QAA, which will publish a report in the coming months.
