Roanoke Family Says They Were Swarmed and Bitten by Bedbugs on Flight, Sue Delta and KLM Airlines
The Albuquerque family alleges flight attendants urged silence to avoid panic and missed connections during a bed bug infestation, seeking $200,000 in damages for injuries and losses.
- On Dec. 18 the Albuquerque family filed a complaint in Roanoke federal court naming Delta Air Lines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as defendants seeking $200,000 in damages.
- After departing Roanoke on March 21, the complaint alleges bed bugs appeared on the KLM-operated transatlantic leg, and attorneys Matt Broughton and Jared Tuck say settlement attempts were ignored, prompting the lawsuit.
- About two hours into the flight, Mrs. Garcia felt bugs crawling and the parents photographed and videotaped insects `in the creases` of their seats; images show dead bugs on KLM-branded napkins.
- A week later the family sought medical care at a pediatric clinic that prescribed topical steroids and an antihistamine, and their complaint says they incurred medical expenses, discarded luggage, scarring, and school embarrassment.
- Delta responded that allegations concern flights it did not operate and it will review the complaint, KLM said it is `unable to comment on the specific allegations at this time`, and as of Dec. 23 attorneys say no settlement offers were made.
