Families of Chinook Crash Victims to Launch Legal Action Against MoD
- The families of the 29 victims of the RAF Chinook ZD576 crash at the Mull of Kintyre on June 2, 1994, have initiated legal proceedings targeting the Ministry of Defence for their refusal to commission a public inquiry.
- The legal action follows over a year of family campaigning amid claims that previous investigations have failed to fulfill the duty to fully investigate the crash and that key documents remain sealed.
- The crash involved 25 British intelligence personnel and four crew members traveling from RAF Aldergrove to a conference at Fort George, and occurred in foggy conditions with the helicopter declared unairworthy before the flight.
- Mark Stephens, the solicitor for the families, stated that the passengers were allowed to fly on an aircraft recognized as highly unsafe, which should not have been allowed to depart, and he criticized the MoD for failing to implement necessary safety measures.
- The families seek a judicial review to compel a public inquiry and access to withheld documents that could provide new insights on the helicopter’s airworthiness and safety failures.
