Mexican authorities say they arrested an alleged local leader of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang

Nelson Arturo N, 29, was arrested along with two others in Mexico City for leading a gang involved in human trafficking and drug crimes, officials said.

  • On Saturday, Mexico's Security Ministry arrested Nelson Arturo `N`, 29, and two other men, ages 36 and 37, in Mexico City after intelligence identified him as Tren de Aragua's leader.
  • Tren de Aragua originated in Venezuela more than a decade ago at Aragua prison and expanded as more than 7.7 million Venezuelan migrants fled economic turmoil.
  • Authorities reported they found the arrested men with more than 100 doses of drugs, two cellphones and cash, while security agents accused the suspect of human trafficking, drug dealing, homicide, kidnapping and extortion.
  • After the arrests, the Attorney General's Office took custody to determine legal status, and on Wednesday five alleged members were extradited from the United States to Chile.
  • Countries across the region have accused the gang of violence, and U.S. officials blame it for drug dealing; President Donald Trump has claimed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro controls it, a claim a declassified U.S. intelligence assessment contradicted.
