Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday — and Stanford Study Suggests It Should Go Away for Good

Clocks will fall back one hour on Nov. 2, ending 2025 Daylight Saving Time and bringing earlier sunrises and sunsets across most of the United States.

  • On Nov. 2, the United States clocks across nearly the entire country fall back one hour to 1 a.m. at 2 a.m. local time, returning to standard time.
  • Tracing its roots to 1918, DST began in the U.S. to conserve fuel during World War I, and the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the current system allowing states to opt out.
  • Most smartphones and newer digital devices update automatically while wall clocks, microwaves and older car models require manual adjustment before going to bed Saturday night, and people will gain one extra hour on Sunday.
  • More than 300 million people, including Elliott and Arthur, will adjust again when clocks spring forward on March 8, 2026, while Hawaii, most of Arizona, and several U.S. territories do not observe DST.
  • A Stanford study reported the biannual shift burdens circadian rhythms, and researchers said eliminating it could prevent obesity in over 2.6 million people and reduce 200,000 to 300,000 stroke cases.
