Cooper Rush to Make 2nd Straight Start at Quarterback for Falcons in Home Opener Against Panthers
Cooper Rush is expected to make his second straight start as Michael Penix Jr. remains limited in recovery from a torn ACL, reports said.
On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons will start quarterback Cooper Rush against the Carolina Panthers in their home opener. NFL Network reported Friday that Rush took first-team reps, confirming he will lead the offense for the second straight week.
Injuries forced the decision, as starter Tua Tagovailoa remains out with an oblique injury. Backup Michael Penix Jr. is "not quite ready" to play following a long recovery from an ACL tear suffered last November.
In the season opener, Rush completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Running back Bijan Robinson accounted for 66 percent of the team's offense, totaling 173 yards from scrimmage.
The Panthers' defense enters the matchup struggling after allowing 59 points and 552 total yards to the Chicago Bears in Week 1. Carolina surrendered six rushing touchdowns, offering potential openings for the Atlanta ground game.
To succeed in divisional play, Atlanta requires improved quarterback performance. Rush, a 9th-year veteran, will make his 18th career start, aiming to stabilize the offense after the difficult season-opening performance.
