Slovenia Declares Two Israeli Ministers Persona Non Grata

SLOVENIA, JUL 17 – Slovenia is the first EU country to declare two Israeli ministers persona non grata for inciting violence and human rights abuses against Palestinians, following failed EU consensus.

  • On Thursday, the Republic of Slovenia declared two ministers persona non grata, naming Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, as the first EU state to do so.
  • Following last month's sanctions by five countries, Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said Slovenia acted after EU foreign ministers failed to agree on joint measures at a Brussels meeting on Tuesday.
  • The Slovenian government accused Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, both West Bank settlers, of making `genocidal statements` inciting extreme violence, and highlighted their support for illegal settlement expansion, forced displacement and calls for violence.
  • The government will bar entry to the ministers and unveil further measures, the minister said.
  • As EU foreign ministers failed to agree on action, Slovenia is seeking alliances with like-minded nations to maintain pressure, `This is pressure on the Israeli government, I believe we will be able to continue this confidently in Slovenia,` Fajon said.
