- On Tuesday, Meta announced it will use AI to analyze visual clues, such as bone structure, to identify and remove users under 13 from Facebook and Instagram.
- A New Mexico jury recently ordered Meta to pay $375 million for misleading consumers about platform safety and child risk. The company then threatened to shut down services in the state.
- Rather than utilizing facial recognition technology, Meta's AI analyzes visual cues such as height and text context to estimate age without identifying specific individuals. The system scans posts, comments, bios, and captions.
- Meta also announced expansion of its "Teen Accounts" on Instagram to 27 countries, including Brazil, with enhanced safeguards restricting DMs to approved contacts. These accounts set privacy to private by default.
- Following these initial deployments, the company plans to expand age-verification technology to Facebook and the U.K. and EU in June, with Instagram Live and Facebook Groups integration coming later.
