Fabio Luisi and Dallas strip Wagner's Ring Cycle of staging and issue audio recording
The 13-disc set captures concert performances without staging, reflecting Luisi’s focus on the score and his desire to present Wagner’s music as an arc.
On May 22, Dallas Symphony Orchestra Music Director Fabio Luisi released a 13-CD audio set of Richard Wagner's four-opera epic "Der Ring des Nibelungen," now available on streaming services via Delos.
Luisi, who became DSO music director in 2020, chose concert performances to focus on the music rather than visual staging, believing audiences should not be distracted by elaborate sets or directorial concepts.
American singers feature prominently in the cast, including Mark Delavan as Wotan, who noted, "We're accessible and they know that we're hungry and we have a chip on our shoulders."
Luisi treats the work like a "big Bruckner symphony," maintaining a musical arc from "Das Rheingold" to "Götterdämmerung" with softer, more legato sounds than his previous Metropolitan Opera rendition.
Building on his study of historical recordings, Luisi previously conducted the cycle while music director of Dresden's Semperoper and draws from Georg Solti's renowned 1958-65 studio set with the Vienna Philharmonic.
