US to leave UN cultural agency Unesco again, diplomats say
UNITED STATES, JUL 22 – The US cites UNESCO's anti-Israel bias, pro-Palestinian and pro-China tilt, and divisive cultural policies as reasons for withdrawal, which will take effect at the end of 2026.
- The United States is withdrawing from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization again, with the decision taking effect at the end of December 2026.
- The US has left UNESCO twice before, in 1984 and 2017, due to perceived anti-US bias and anti-Israel bias, respectively.
- The US provides about 8% of UNESCO's total budget, down from about 20% when it previously withdrew from the agency.
