UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – The U.S. cites UNESCO's anti-Israel bias, pro-Palestinian and pro-China tilt, and divisive social agendas as reasons for withdrawal, which accounts for 8% of UNESCO's budget, officials said.
- Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. is once again exiting UNESCO, with the withdrawal taking effect at the end of December 2026.
- This second withdrawal follows a previous exit during Trump's first term, motivated partly by objections to UNESCO admitting Palestine as a member state in 2011.
- UNESCO, a United Nations agency created shortly after World War II to foster global harmony and safeguard cultural heritage, currently recognizes 1,248 World Heritage sites worldwide, including 26 located in the United States, such as Ohio's Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks.
- UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay called the withdrawal regrettable and contrary to multilateralism, while U.S. officials label UNESCO as supporting "woke, divisive cultural and social causes."
- The withdrawal may impact U.S. participation in heritage preservation efforts, but officials stress continued commitment to these causes despite ending UNESCO membership.
