Star Wars: Taika Waititi Confirms His Film Has Been "Put On Ice"
Waititi says the project is on ice as he and Tony McNamara shift to a different film together.
Director Taika Waititi confirmed his long-in-development Star Wars movie is officially "on ice" while promoting Klara and the Sun, telling Inverse he and writer Tony McNamara are working on a different project instead.
Rumors linking the Thor: Ragnarok director to a Star Wars film emerged in January 2020, and although Kathleen Kennedy confirmed a script existed during her final months at Lucasfilm earlier this year, production momentum stalled.
Citing a busy schedule, Waititi noted he is managing four other film projects, adding, "I don't even know how to dress it up or make it even vague," regarding the move away from the franchise.
Upcoming works on his slate include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Incal, and Barn 8, alongside the What We Do in the Shadows sequel, We're Wolves, keeping Waititi occupied across multiple projects.
Waititi has not ruled out a return to the franchise, stating, "Ice ages do come to an end," though it remains unclear if or when the studio will revive his specific vision for the universe.
