EXCLUSIVE: Senior Toronto cop charged with impaired driving, sources say he was found asleep at wheel
On Monday, the Toronto Police Service confirmed that Inspector Michael Hayles was charged with impaired driving after being found asleep behind the wheel of a stopped vehicle on Sunday morning.
Officers responded to the Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East area at about 6 a.m. on Sunday, where they discovered the inspector asleep behind the wheel of a stopped vehicle.
Hayles, a 30-year veteran assigned to 55 Division, was off-duty during the incident and faces counts of impaired operation of a conveyance and exceeding blood alcohol concentration.
According to spokesperson Nadine Ramadan, Hayles has been suspended with pay in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act.
Charges against the inspector have not been proven in a court of law, and Chief Myron Demkiw acknowledged the incident while confirming Hayles was off-duty at the time.
