Exclusive: Report warns of harmful rise in social ideology in medicine
Medical journals have tripled their focus on non-health factors like environmental, social, and economic well-being over the last decade, raising concerns about harmful ideologies influencing healthcare.
Ian Kingsbury, Senior Director at Do No Harm, expressed concerns about the expanding social determinants of health framework affecting medicine.
Kingsbury stated that adding topics beyond a physician’s expertise promotes a leftist political ideology rather than focusing on quality patient care.
The report noted a large increase in articles on race, ethnicity, and discrimination related to social determinants of health starting around 2019–2020 and warned that policymakers may be overly broadening healthcare issues.
