ICE Arrests Ferris State Professor in Detroit

Sumith Gunasekera, arrested for immigration violations and prior sex-crime convictions in Canada and Nevada, was placed on administrative leave by Ferris State University, ICE said.

  • On Nov. 12, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Sumith Gunasekera, Ferris State University professor, in Detroit; he remains in federal custody awaiting legal hearings.
  • Investigators say he applied for a change of status in 2012, leading USCIS to uncover Canadian convictions and DHS to allege he used repeated appeals to avoid deportation.
  • Court filings indicate Gunasekera was arrested twice in Brampton, Ontario on August 28 and August 31, 1998, convicted in November 1998 with one month served, and later convicted in Las Vegas in January 2004 with fines.
  • Ferris State University placed the professor on administrative leave after learning of his arrest, university spokesman Dave Murray said, and Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned the situation in a Tuesday statement.
  • ICE says Gunasekera was living in the U.S. illegally and alleges he is an undocumented immigrant from Sri Lanka; records show he first entered in February 1998 and later worked as an associate professor in Big Rapids, Michigan.
