Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg stripped of MBE
The King annulled Stuart Hogg's MBE after his 2024 domestic abuse conviction involving coercive control, following public and political calls for removal of the honour.
- A Gazette notice states `The King has directed that the appointment of Stuart William Hogg to be a Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 30 December 2023 shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order`.
- Hogg admitted abusing his estranged wife in November 2024, covering behaviour between 2019 and 2024, leading to his conviction for coercive and controlling domestic abuse.
- Evidence at Selkirk Sheriff Court detailed coercive behaviour including tracking and sending more than 200 texts, leading to a community payback order with supervision.
- Campaigners and politicians pressed for the honour to be revoked, and removal followed their calls from Glasgow Women's Aid and SNP leaders Stephen Flynn and John Swinney.
- Hogg's MBE, awarded in the 2024 New Year Honours, was cancelled after his conviction for domestic abuse, raising concerns about precedent in the honours system.
