Ex-NJ officer sentenced to 27 years in shooting death of driver, wounding of passenger in 2019 chase
A former New Jersey police officer receives a 27-year prison sentence for killing one man and injuring another in a high-speed car chase in Newark.
Judge Michael Ravin sentences Jovanny Crespo to 20 years for manslaughter and seven years for assault to deter a "shoot-first, ask-questions-later" mindset among officers.
Crespo will not be eligible for parole for nearly 23 years, deviating from guidelines limiting deadly force to imminent danger situations during the chase.
