Former New Orleans Saints Linebacker Keith Mitchell Has Passed Away
Mitchell earned Pro Bowl honors in 2000 and played 79 games for New Orleans over five seasons, the team said.
On Thursday, former New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl linebacker Keith Mitchell died at 51, Texas A&M athletics confirmed. The cause of death remains unknown.
Mitchell rose to prominence as a key member of Texas A&M's famed 'Wrecking Crew' defense before the Saints signed him as an undrafted free agent in 1997. He earned Pro Bowl honors during his five-year tenure in New Orleans.
Over his seven-year career, the linebacker recorded 408 tackles and 19.5 sacks, including a career-high 6.5 sacks during his 2000 Pro Bowl season. He also played for the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars before retiring due to spinal injury.
Texas A&M inducted the linebacker into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015 to honor his collegiate achievements. Following his retirement, Mitchell shifted to wellness and released a book called 'The Mindfulness Mastery Playbook' late last year.
The Saints organization publicly mourned the passing of the team legend on Thursday, cementing Mitchell's legacy in franchise history. He remains one of just eight linebackers in Saints history to make the Pro Bowl.
