Ex-Illinois House Speaker Madigan Must Report To Prison To Begin Serving Sentence
- On Oct. 13, former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan must surrender by 2 p.m. to the federal prison assigned by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
- Madigan was convicted earlier this year on 10 counts including bribery, conspiracy and wire fraud related to Commonwealth Edison deals.
- U.S. District Judge John Robert Blakey said Madigan lied repeatedly, calling his testimony `a nauseating display of perjury and evasion`, and imposed a $2,500,000 fine plus three years probation.
- Meanwhile, his opening appellate brief is not due until Nov. 3 and the court likely won't hold oral arguments until early 2026, while his final placement remains unclear.
- Madigan's downfall ends a five-decade political career with nearly 40 years as Illinois House speaker, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Streicker said his damage to Illinois exceeded Rod Blagojevich and he amassed $40,000,000.
