- On Sunday, René Stadtkewitz of the Alternative for Germany won the mayoral election in Zehdenick, securing 58.4 per cent of the vote and becoming the first directly elected AfD mayor in Brandenburg.
- The election occurred early after previous mayor Alexander Kretzschmar went on sick leave 11 days after taking office, continuing a pattern of three mayors in five years in the Brandenburg town.
- Free Democratic Party candidate Stephan von Hundelshausen finished second with 28.6 per cent, while FDP state chairman Zyon Braun called the AfD victory a "shadow over the town" despite his party's "respectable success."
- AfD state chairman René Springer described the result as an "unmistakable signal" for future elections, as nationwide polling shows the anti-immigration party reaching record support levels of up to 28 per cent.
- Stadtkewitz previously served as a Christian Democratic Union member of the Berlin parliament before founding the German Freedom Party; he joined the AfD in 2024 and has served on the Zehdenick town council since summer 2024.
