'Evil dead': Tanushree Dutta reacts to death of Nana Patekar, the actor she named in India's #MeToo reckoning
The debate grew after Sandhya Mridul and other actors said death should not erase survivors’ claims.
On Thursday, October 8, 2026, veteran actor Nana Patekar died at his home in Goa following a suspected cardiac arrest, confirmed by medical officials at Manipal Hospital.
Tanushree Dutta faced online trolling after describing Patekar as "evil dead," reviving her 2008 sexual harassment allegations against the late actor from the film Horn Ok Pleassss.
Singer Sona Mohapatra defended Dutta in a video, arguing that public mourning should not erase survivors' pain. She wrote, "Dying shouldn't erase uncomfortable chapters of someone's life."
Mridul emphasized that "abuse does not become untrue because the abuser is gone," while Mohapatra criticized social media users for attacking Dutta during public tributes.
The 2018 allegations became a landmark #MeToo case in India; however, a Mumbai magistrate court disposed of the matter in March 2025 citing delays over ten years in filing.
The All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has strongly condemned Tanushree Dutta's 'evil dead' statement on social media on the demise of Nana Patekar.
