FSSAI Cracks Whip on Everest Food, Hing Powder Sales Halted After Samples Found ‘Sub-Standard’

- On Saturday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India prohibited Everest Food Products Pvt Ltd and Laljee Godhoo from selling "Hing powder," which regulators found to be sub-standard.
- Regulators classified the goods as "Misbranded and Sub-standard" due to non-compliance with the FSS Regulations, 2011; alcoholic extract levels were 0 per cent against the mandatory 5 per cent threshold.
- Samples of Yellow Hing Powder and Black Hing Powder showed alcoholic extract at 3.29 per cent and 4.4 per cent, respectively, failing to meet prescribed Compounded Asafoetida standards.
- The Standards Authority ordered both companies to submit an action plan to rectify malpractices and ensure all future products comply with the FSS Act, 2006.
- Officials warned of further enforcement measures if companies fail to correct manufacturing mistakes; regulations mandate that starch content in hing must not exceed 1 per cent by weight.
