Evenepoel Puts Worlds 'Disappointment' to Bed with European Crown
Remco Evenepoel secured the continental title after a 196-kilometer race, becoming the first cyclist to hold every major championship jersey in professional cycling, team representatives confirmed.
On Sunday, Remco Evenepoel won the European Championships road race in Sencur, Slovenia, narrowly defeating Italy's Giulio Ciccone in a photo finish with a time of 4:16:37.
Belgian teammates controlled the 196.3km race throughout, neutralizing breakaway threats including France's Pavel Sivakov and dictating pace on the demanding 2.1km Močjnica climb.
After sliding on a corner during his first attack with 36km remaining, Evenepoel quickly recovered and launched a decisive second move with 32km to go, which only Ciccone could follow.
Completing his championship jerseys, Evenepoel called the win 'a big relief' after his disappointment at the worlds, validating his status as a versatile champion across road and time trial disciplines.
Evenepoel plans to skip Wednesday's time trial to focus on Il Lombardia, an Italian Classic missing from his palmarès, where he previously finished behind Tadej Pogacar in recent editions.
Remco Evenepoel reacts, attacks, falls, gets angry, attacks again, gets angry again, and then wins a photo finish sprint against Giulio Ciccone at the European Championships. Another gap filled on his list of honours. But it was a close call!
