Metro Vancouver Community of Lions Bay Issues Evacuation Alert Due to Wildfire

  • On Sunday at 9 p.m., The Village of Lions Bay issued an evacuation alert for about 30 properties on Oceanview and Kelvin Grove roads, upslope from Highway 99. The wildfire is burning out of control southeast of the community.
  • A rare and intense thunderstorm delivered some 7,000 lightning strikes across the province over the weekend, sparking dozens of new fires. Environment Canada reported nearly 2,000 strikes between Saturday night and Sunday morning, disrupting operations at Vancouver International Airport.
  • Supported by Metro Vancouver and West Vancouver, The BCWS is responding with ground and air crews. Lions Bay Search and Rescue teams were tasked Sunday to help evacuate hikers from the area near Mount Unnecessary and the Erin Moore trails.
  • As of Monday morning, 184 active wildfires are burning across the province, with about 35 per cent classified as out of control. Smoke from the fire may be visible from the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
  • The BCWS warned that "holdover fires" could emerge where lightning strikes smoulder in the underbrush before igniting in warmer temperatures. About 60 new fires were started in the last 24 hours.
