EV Drivers No Longer Need Planning Permission for Home Chargers Under New Rules

  • Electric vehicle drivers can now immediately install home chargers crossing public pavements without planning permission, the Department for Transport announced, saving up to £300 on installation costs.
  • Vicky Edmonds, chief executive of EVA England, noted that "60% of petrol and diesel drivers without off-street parking would never consider an EV," highlighting the "driveway divide" this policy aims to address.
  • Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, supported the move but cautioned "there is of course no guarantee of being able to park in front of their own home" within charging cable reach.
  • Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood stated the EV transition is "in full swing," with sales up 36% on last year as over 190,000 drivers have saved thousands making the switch.
  • The Government has also launched two consultations to help tenants and leaseholders access charging, while considering mandatory requirements to prevent landlords from unjustly refusing installation applications.
