Europeans Are Among the 150 Isis Detainees Transferred From Syria to Iraq

About 150 Islamic State detainees, including foreign nationals, are being transferred from northeastern Syria to Iraqi prisons for interrogation and trial amid security concerns, U.S. Central Command said.

  • On Wednesday, U.S. Central Command said the transfer process began, moving 150 IS members from Syria to secure locations in Iraq.
  • After a Shaddadeh prison escape on Monday, Iraqi and U.S. officials pressed for action as about 120 inmates fled, and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani raised transfers in a Tuesday call with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
  • 144 detainees arrived in Iraq Wednesday night, an Iraqi intelligence general said, including Iraqi citizens and foreign nationals such as around 240 Tunisians, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan detainees.
  • Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council said Thursday that Iraqi courts will prosecute transferred detainees, while Basim Alawadi called it `a pre-emptive step to protect Iraq's national security`; additional transfers depend on ongoing evaluations.
  • Al-Hol camp, once around 73,000 at its peak in 2019, now holds about 24,000, while Gweiran prison in Hassakeh held about 4,500 IS-linked detainees and Roj camp houses about 2,500.
