EU Will Condemn War at G20 Summit 'Irrespective' of Putin's Attendance
European leaders plan to keep pressure on Moscow as the United States invites Putin to a summit where Russia’s war in Ukraine will dominate talks.
- On Thursday, Olof Gill of the European Union said the European Union will condemn Russia's invasion at the G20 summit in Miami, regardless of whether Russian President Vladimir Putin attends.
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Wednesday the administration formally invited Putin to the summit President Donald Trump will host at his Miami golf resort.
- Putin has avoided in-person G20 summits since 2019, participating remotely in 2020 and 2021; the Trump administration's strategy to include Russia differs sharply from European Union efforts to isolate the Kremlin.
- The Kremlin said it was "grateful and appreciative" and will study the invitation, while High Representative Kaja Kallas criticized it as "the wrong path to normalise people who are starting wars."
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested the Miami summit could facilitate a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin, which Ukraine would support "if such a format is approved and there is a corresponding agreement.
