EU launches ambitious Water Resilience Strategy: a holistic approach
- As part of its newly launched European Water Resilience Strategy, the European Commission unveiled the establishment of the European Water Academy to strengthen water management efforts across Europe.
- This announcement comes as Europe faces mounting challenges to its water resources driven by climate-related pressures, deteriorating infrastructure, and poor water management, compounded by severe environmental conditions like flooding and drought.
- The academy will assist researchers and innovators in advancing and bringing to market new technologies focused on sustainable water management, including treated water recycling, saltwater purification, targeted irrigation methods, and monitoring of wastewater, leveraging JRC resources and collaborations between public and private sectors.
- A digital platform linked to the academy will provide flexible access to training, simulations, and expert communities, with full operation expected by 2026 and funding from various EU sources.
- The academy seeks to connect scientific research with practical technology deployment, enhancing skills and expertise throughout Europe’s water sector to promote a sustainable and resilient water economy in the face of growing environmental and public health challenges.
