EU Delegation Heads to Budapest for Talks on Frozen Funds
Officials will discuss legal reforms and Ukraine disputes as Hungary seeks access to about €17 billion in frozen EU funding, the Commission said.
- On Thursday, a high-level European Union delegation arrived in Budapest to initiate financial negotiations with Peter Magyar and his incoming Tisza-led government, signaling Brussels' rapid engagement following the party's election victory.
- Magyar secured a sweeping victory in last Sunday's election, ending Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule. Hungary must now address 27 conditions to unfreeze EU funds blocked in 2022 due to "violations of the principles of the rule of law."
- The delegation includes budget and Recovery and Resilience Facility experts providing technical assistance to map "super milestones" linked to judicial independence, anti-corruption safeguards, and procurement transparency reforms.
- Negotiations also address Hungary's veto on a €90 billion Ukraine aid package and disputes over the Druzhba pipeline. Magyar urged Orbán to lift the veto before leaving office to resolve the energy supply conflict.
- Hungary risks losing nearly €10.4 billion in Recovery and Resilience Facility funds if conditions are unmet by August's deadline. Meeting these conditions could unlock over €7 billion in frozen cohesion funding over coming years.
