The Court of Justice of the European Union annulled the decision of the European Commission, by which it approved state aid from the Hungarian government for the implementation of the Paksh-2 nuclear power plant project jointly with Rosatom.
The recent ruling of the European Court of Justice does not limit or slow down the Paks II investment in any way, nor does the body's decision against the European Commission, stated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó in Budapest on Thursday.
The European Commission should not have approved state aid that Hungary gave to a Russian contractor for the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant because it failed to check the contract's compliance with European Union rules, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg announced today.
Austria's successful action now also embarrasses the European Commission, which had caused a manifestly illegal decision on aid.
The European Commission should have examined whether it was in line with EU public procurement rules to award the contracts for the two new reactors directly to a Russian company.
