Measure remains under consideration as bloc consults member states and other parties to safeguard international court, European Commission says
The European Parliament asked the EU to use the Blocking Statute to protect the International Criminal Court, which is the subject of sanctions by the United States.
The escalation of US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) has intensified the debate on the possible activation of the European Blocking Statute, according to a briefing note by the European Parliament Research Service (EPRS) published on Monday. The regulation, which was introduced in 1996, aims to protect EU natural and legal persons from the effects of third-country sanctions applied extraterritorially.
The EU Commission reported that all options are on the table, including the Barring Statute against US sanctions against the UCM. The commission said that there is no exact date for the introduction of the charter, but that it is in dialogue with member states.
