The EU will ban Russian liquefied natural gas by January 2027 and pipeline gas by September 2027 to reduce reliance on Russia after it supplied 40% of EU gas demand pre-invasion.
- Early on Wednesday, representatives of the European Parliament and EU governments clinched a deal to phase out Russian natural gas by 30 September 2027, the Danish Presidency said.
- At its peak, Russia supplied about 40% of EU gas demand, roughly 140 billion cubic metres, and EU officials said Russia 'weaponized' supplies, destabilizing markets and raising prices.
- Spot purchases will be prohibited from April 25, 2026 for Russian liquefied natural gas and June 17, 2026 for pipeline gas, while all Russian LNG imports will be banned from Jan. 1, 2027 and pipeline imports from 30 September 2027.
- European companies will be allowed to invoke force majeure to exit contracts once the ban takes effect; entities breaching it face penalties up to �40 million or 3.5% turnover, and EU members must submit diversification plans to the European Commission by March 1.
- EU officials estimate Russian LNG deliveries this year at around 15 billion euros, while the European Commission will propose a Russian pipeline oil ban early 2026, targeting end-2027; Hungary signalled it will keep buying Russian energy as plans for Hungary and Slovakia are drafted.
