Ethiopian PM welcomes India's Modi in Addis Ababa at start of two day visit

PM Modi is the first global leader to receive Ethiopia's highest civilian award for strengthening bilateral ties and advancing Global South partnership, officials said.

  • From December 16 to 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Addis Ababa for a two-day State visit, personally welcomed by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali at the airport.
  • With India set to assume the BRICS chair on January 1, 2026, the visit seeks to deepen strategic partnerships in Africa and forms the second leg of Modi's Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman tour.
  • Prime Minister Modi was conferred Ethiopia's highest award the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia at a ceremony at the Addis International Convention Centre on Tuesday and addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament.
  • Both governments agreed to expand cooperation in education, transport, agriculture, health, science and technology, and artificial intelligence, with new agreements expected to boost trade and investment as over 175 Indian companies operate in Ethiopia.
  • Hosting the African Union, Addis Ababa positions Ethiopia as a diplomatic hub and its critical minerals attract India as a strategic economic partner for mining cooperation.
