Ethiopia Says It Must Defend Itself Against Eritrea’s ‘All-Out Invasion’
Ethiopia said Eritrean troops advanced deep into Tigray as fighting spread, with officials estimating 5,000 to 8,000 soldiers in the region.
On Friday, Ethiopia's government informed the Security Council it must defend itself against an "all-out invasion" by Eritrean forces in a letter shared with Reuters.
Eritrean forces have deployed up to 60 km into Ethiopian territory, including mechanized units described as a "blatant act of aggression" by Ethiopia's government.
Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of backing a rebel alliance battling federal government troops in Tigray, Amhara, and Afar since September 23.
Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel denied the incursion reports on Wednesday, calling them an Ethiopian plan to justify a war of aggression against his country.
The reported incursion has raised fears of outright war between the two Horn of Africa neighbors, following their recent severance of diplomatic ties.
