Estonia's population fell by 5,400 in 2024, as birth rate and migration slow

Estonia's population fell to 1,369,285 as of January 1, 2025, state agency Statistics Estonia reported, representing drop of 5,402 on year.

The number of births and immigrants has decreased.

According to Terje Trasberg, the chief analyst at Statistics Estonia, 2024 was similar to 2023. “Last year, almost 6,000 more people died than were born. Immigration exceeded emigration by 550 people. While in the last two years the positive migration balance has been able to compensate for the exceptionally low number of births, in 2024 the population as a whole also decreased by more than 5,000 people,” Trasberg explained.
