Essex's Ambulance Service Moves to Highest Alert Level Amid Extreme Demand
The service deployed 100 extra crews and warned that some patients may face longer waits as call volumes hit a record high.
The East of England Ambulance Service Trust escalated to Resource Escalation Action Plan Level 4 on Friday, citing a "significant and sustained increase in demand" driven by hot weather and hospital transfer delays.
During the week commencing June 22, EEAST responded to an average of 332 life-threatening calls daily, a 22.5% increase over June 2025 averages; the emergency operations centre recorded its highest weekly volume since October 2017.
On June 26, EEAST saw its busiest day, responding to 416 life-threatening emergencies; the trust deployed an additional 100 ambulance crews across the region last week to bolster capacity.
Chief Operating Officer Darren Meads stated the escalation enables deployment of all available clinicians to frontline duties, though patients with less urgent needs may experience longer waits or be directed to alternative NHS services.
With temperatures forecast to rise again, officials urge the public to call 999 only for life-threatening emergencies, recommending NHS 111 online or by phone for urgent but non-life-threatening health concerns.
