Why Did Christian Eriksen Terminate His Contract at Wolfsburg?

  • On Wednesday, Christian Eriksen departed VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent. The 34-year-old midfielder, formerly of Former Tottenham, Inter Milan, and Manchester United, is returning to Denmark.
  • Following his collapse during a Denmark and Ukraine match in June, Eriksen requested to terminate his contract early. "Right now, it's important for me to be close to my family in Denmark," he said in a statement.
  • The Dane made 34 appearances, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists during his season at the German club. He captained the side, though the team suffered relegation from the Bundesliga after 29 years in the top flight.
  • Wolfsburg Managing Director Dieter Hecking praised Eriksen's character, stating the club wanted to grant his request for freedom. Hecking added that the club remains in good hands as it aims to return to the Bundesliga.
  • Eriksen has played with an ICD since suffering cardiac arrest five years ago at Euro 2020. He is currently following a rehabilitation program in Denmark, with his future playing plans remaining unclear.
