EPA Will Loosen Summertime Fuel Emissions Rules to Increase the US Gas Supply
The change will add hundreds of thousands of barrels a day to the market and gives Texas, Arizona and California 20-day state waivers.
- On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it will end summer-blend gasoline requirements two weeks early, allowing sales of 10% ethanol gasoline with higher vapor pressure starting September 1.
- President Donald Trump's administration framed the decision as critical to boost fuel supply and lower costs, with pump prices averaging $4.10 per gallon compared to about $3.13 a year ago.
- The Agency also granted 20-day waivers for state-level fuel rules in Texas, Arizona, and California, with federal waivers remaining effective through September 15.
- Tom Kloza, chief energy adviser at Gulf Oil, noted the impact might be limited unless New York and New Jersey also agree to waive their own state-level fuel controls.
- Federal officials will monitor regional inventories and remain prepared to extend waivers through subsequent actions if necessary to ensure adequate supplies for consumers after September 15.
