Officials Break Ground on Massive Carbon Capture Project in Central Alberta
The hub will initially store up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and connect to Alberta Carbon Trunk Line infrastructure.
- On Wednesday, Enhance Energy Inc. broke ground on its Origins CCS project in Clive, Alberta, positioning the central village to house Canada's largest carbon capture site.
- The company already operates Alberta's largest CCS site in Clive, which has permanently stored more than 9 million tonnes of CO2 since 2020, and helped found the $1.2-billion Alberta Carbon Trunk Line.
- Operations are slated to begin in January, with the Origins hub initially capable of storing up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually from the Northwest Redwater Sturgeon Refinery and Nutrien Redwater.
- Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said the project helps Canada reach its potential as an energy superpower, while Alberta Energy Minister Brian Jean stated the province "produces the most responsible oil and gas in the world."
- This capacity is roughly equivalent to removing more than 500,000 cars from the road annually, as federal and provincial governments and industry collaborate as "Team Canada" to drive investment and create jobs in rural Alberta.
