Seven-minute cancer treatment jab to be rolled out in England in world-first

  • Patients in England will have access to a new seven-minute cancer treatment jab that cuts treatment time by up to 75%. The injection technology, approved by the MHRA, allows patients to switch from intravenous delivery to injections, saving valuable time.
  • The treatment, known as atezolizumab or Tecentriq, is a checkpoint inhibitor that helps the immune system find and kill cancer cells. It is given to patients with various cancers, including lung, breast, liver, and bladder.
  • NHS England expects the majority of the 3,600 patients starting atezolizumab treatment each year to switch to injections, freeing up time in chemotherapy units. Patients receiving intravenous chemotherapy alongside atezolizumab may continue with the transfusion.
