England Resting Captain Maro Itoje During Nations Championship in July
On Monday, England head coach Steve Borthwick named hooker Jamie George as captain for the summer tour, with Maro Itoje rested for Tests against South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina.
Borthwick stood Itoje down due to his heavy workload, noting the 31-year-old played over 30 matches per season for two years and captained the Lions to a series win in Australia last summer.
The 36-man squad features five uncapped players, including 19-year-old Saracens wing Noah Caluori, who scored 19 tries in the English Premiership; number eight Greg Fisilau and props George Kloska and Vilikesa Sela complete the rookie contingent.
England begins the Nations Championship against world champion South Africa in Johannesburg on July 4, followed by matches against Fiji in Liverpool and Argentina in Santiago del Estero.
South Africa-born centre Benhard Janse is included in the squad but remains ineligible for the tour opener due to residency rules, meaning he must wait until Fiji on July 11 for his first Test appearance.
