England Optimistic Star Flyhalf Will Face Australia
England are hopeful the 24-year-old fly-half will be fit after training fully for the first time since a calf injury.
On Monday, England confirmed British and Irish Lions scrum-half Alex Mitchell will miss the entire autumn campaign due to a hamstring injury, while Northampton team-mate Archie McParland is sidelined for Sunday's clash against Australia with a calf issue.
To cover the absences, England added Ben Spencer and Harry Randall to the squad as cover, with Jack van Poortvliet expected to start in the number nine jersey at Allianz Stadium.
Fly-Half Fin Smith faces a pivotal practice session on Wednesday as he battles a calf problem; head coach Steve Borthwick has George Ford and Marcus Smith on standby if Smith fails to prove his fitness.
Defence coach Richard Wigglesworth remains "cautiously optimistic" regarding Smith's availability after the player participated in full training on Wednesday without setbacks.
In addition to the current absences, Sam Underhill, Kepueli Tuipulotu, and Benhard Janse van Rensburg will miss the whole of the second phase of the Nations Championship due to their respective injuries.
