Energy bills in Great Britain forecast to jump by £276 a year from January

Cornwall Insight said wholesale gas costs and low European storage could push the typical annual bill to £1,999 in January, up £276.

  • Cornwall Insight forecasts that average dual-fuel bills in Great Britain could rise 16% to £1,999 a year from January, an increase of £276.
  • Cornwall Insight attributes the projected increase partly to the Middle East conflict, which has disrupted gas supplies and affected global energy markets.
  • Ofgem’s October price-cap increase will raise the average direct-debit household bill in England, Scotland and Wales to £1,723 a year.
  • Removing the 5% electricity VAT charge until March is expected by the Government to save typical bill payers about £45 annually, while gas remains subject to 5% VAT.
