#EndSARS Anniversary: Police Fire Tear Gas To Disperse Gathering At Lekki Toll Gate
Police used tear gas to break up the memorial as activists pressed for justice and reforms, with organizers planning 15 wreaths for victims and the missing.
On Tuesday, police fired tear gas at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, dispersing participants gathered to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality.
The #EndSARS movement began in October 2020, when young Nigerians demanded an end to police brutality and accountability for abuses attributed to the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad .
Organizers planned a wreath-laying ceremony for 11 a.m. to honor 15 victims, including nine deceased individuals and journalist Pelumi Onifade, before police intervened.
The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre condemned the dispersal, renewing calls for justice and enforcement of the Police Act 2020.
Recurrent police dispersal of memorial gatherings since 2021 demonstrates ongoing concerns about citizens' rights to peaceful assembly six years after the initial #EndSARS demonstrations.
