Mohamed Bazoum now holds the title of former President of Niger after a presidency by default, a term during which he remained unavailable and unwell for three years. Without officially leaving Niger, Mahamadou Issouf's successor was ambushed by a group of senior officers and generals of the Nigerien armed forces.
