Jesy Nelson 'Couldn't Stop Crying' After Watching New Doc
Jesy Nelson says early diagnosis could have preserved her daughters’ strength as the government plans to screen hundreds of thousands of newborns.
On Friday, Prime Video released 'Life Changing', a documentary following former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson as she campaigns for national newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy .
Nelson's campaign followed the SMA1 diagnosis of her twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, last year, as she advocates for early testing to preserve muscle strength.
The Department of Health announced on Thursday that a national newborn screening programme for SMA will roll out across England later this year using a heel-prick blood test.
Nelson shared her delight on Instagram regarding the screening rollout, which she says will cover the country by October, noting that her campaign helped her feel she "had purpose."
While England proceeds, reports note that newborn SMA screening is not yet available in Wales or Northern Ireland, with The Guardian writing, "You just want to reach through the screen and hug her.
